FBI building new site in IndianapolisProject expected to draw 1,000 construction jobsPublished: Wednesday, 10 Jun 2009, 6:41PM EDT INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The FBI is building a new field office on a 10-acre site east of 86th and Allisonville Road in the Castleton area. The three-story office building will give the bureau nearly 100,000 square feet of usable space. Agents are even more excited about what will go inside the new facility. "The technology that will come along with this building will not only enhance our capability, but the many partners we have across the state," said Special Agent Mike Welch. The bureau currently occupies offices on three floors of the downtown Federal Building. Agents complain the set up is dysfunctional and 10 years ago, the bureau flagged the Indianapolis field office as one of the 35 in the country that needed to be upgraded. "We found the existing facilities to be undersized, not quite mission ready as they would and not always as secure as they needed to be," said Deputy Assistant Director of Facilities, Mike Donnelly. The new building should be ready in January 2011. Most, but not all, Indianpolis-based agents will work out of the new field office. More than likely, at least one component will stay behind to address those issues within the downtown metropolitan area," said Welch. A private company named Fedcar developed the project. Once construction is complete in January 2011, Fedcar will lease the space to the U.S. Government. The construction project will create an estimated 1,000 jobs.
